Can you imagine being a young teenager, anticipating your wedding and all the bright things that the future might hold, when one day you receive a heavenly visitor and learn that you are to become pregnant with the Son of God?
Let’s walk through this Advent season with weekly Scripture readings and hymns. I pray this keeps our eyes, minds, and hearts fixed on Christ, even as we await His promised return.
The goodness of God does not wax and wane with the seasons, like the fickleness of the human heart. His goodness, and consequently His lovingkindness, or mercy, is everlasting.
Just because you or I don’t think something is important, doesn’t mean it isn’t. Just because the same scenario wouldn’t affect you or me in an adverse manner, doesn’t mean that it isn’t trying for our sister in Christ. As a Christian, we are called to bear the burdens of our siblings (Galatians 6:2), whether these be the burdens of mortifying sin and temptation, or other heavy spiritual and emotional encumbrances.
I asked, and you answered. The question? Is anyone interested in an Equipping Eve book giveaway? The answer? Well...
If by excessive labor we die before reaching the average age of man, worn out in the Master's service, then glory be to God. We shall have so much less of earth and so much more of heaven. It is our duty and our privilege to exhaust our lives for Jesus. —Charles Spurgeon
By some reports, a male mockingbird can learn and effectively mimic more than 180 different calls or sounds over the course of just a few months. They are indeed adept mimickers. With that illustration in mind, we ought to consider the question: Are churches today filled with mockingbird Christians?
Why can believers live lives so full of joy? This joy is not mere happiness, which waxes and wanes with changing circumstances; rather, this is a trusting confidence found in the Lord alone. The Christian's unshakeable joy is founded on His character and on His promises.
The character and nature of God run deeper than even His unfathomable sovereignty. It is the culmination of the entirety of His magnificent attributes that provides the full foundation of our trust and hope in Him, and that serves as the justification for our unshakeable joy in all circumstances.
God takes his elect out of the house of bondage, beats off the chains and fetters of sin, and brings them into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
When the gospel is presented in anger, the grace of God and His mercy toward and love for sinners cannot be seen. When Bible teaching is characterized by to-do lists and instructions that even dictate one's emotions, there is no room for God's grace. It is suffocated by man's rules and expectations. The student sitting under this teaching is far too busy attempting to measure up; he is too consumed to even consider that, when he stumbles, there is grace. In fact, I daresay that the reaction of many individuals exposed to this type of teaching is more of a reaction of fear of man than fear of God.
We delight when life brings ease, comfort, and good news, and we thank God for restful times of joy. Yet, Scripture promises that our earthly lives may not always be defined by favorable circumstances. The good news for the Christian, however, is that she can still have unshakeable joy, even in times of trial.
The steadfast joy of a child of God is a distinguishing mark that sets believers apart from the unbelieving world. Do you have unshakeable joy?
The Christmas card nativity we display amid evergreens and holly is beautiful and serene, but it is only the first chapter of the full Christmas story.
God is holy and demands holiness (1 Peter 1:13-16). Jesus Christ is the only One through whom man may obtain peace with God. This infant who, upon His birth, was the Prince of Peace, would one day die as the perfect, atoning sacrifice for those who are His.
Truly this is indeed a divine child. Truly He alone is the Father of eternity.
His name shall be called Mighty God. Mighty. God. El Gibor. God, the mighty One.
